FENDER SAID
The Made in Japan Fender Flagship Tokyo First Anniversary Urushi Stratocaster, Tsuikoku is a special guitar that commemorates the first anniversary of the opening of Fender Flagship Tokyo, Fender's first flagship store. It features a deep, unprecedented jet-black beauty achieved using urushi, a traditional Japanese lacquer.
This unique guitar is a collaboration with Yusuke Iwahara of Misora Urushi Kogei, one of the top lacquer craftsmen who won the Special Jury Prize at the 53rd National Lacquerware Exhibition and was selected as the representative craftsman of Nagano Prefecture in the "LEXUS NEW TAKUMI PROJECT 2016."
Urushi is made from the sap of lacquer trees, with only about 200cc obtained from a tree over 20 years old. The sap, after impurities are removed, is called "kiurushi" (raw lacquer). When heated and partially dehydrated, it becomes "suguro" (pure black lacquer), and when pigments are added, it is known as "colored lacquer." Black roiro-urushi, in particular, achieves a deep black color through a chemical reaction with iron powder during the refining process, different from other paints. Traditionally, urushi was used to protect wooden tableware, but over time, decorative and various lacquer techniques were developed, and it is now used to enhance aesthetics on various materials including metal, leather, and glass.
The unique "tsuikoku" technique used for the guitar body, characterized by its distinctive mottled pattern, involves layering black lacquer in multiple applications, making it one of the most labor-intensive and high-skill urushi techniques, designated as a traditional craft by the government. Using a tool called "tanpo," patterns are placed with lacquer, layered repeatedly, and polished smooth to reveal the layered design.
The guitar itself is based on a 60s Stratocaster, featuring cross-wire pickups, a six-point synchronized tremolo, and meticulous details that carry Fender's authentic lineage. It also features gold hardware, gold lines on the pickguard, and gold lettering on the knobs, showcasing an attention to detail. This special guitar, merging the highest craftsmanship with Fender's traditional heritage, will be released in a limited quantity.
