The Made in Japan Limited Collection URUSHI Stratocaster, created in collaboration with top lacquer craftsman Yusuke Iwahara of Misora Urushi Kogei, who won the Special Jury Prize at the 53rd National Lacquerware Exhibition, achieves an unprecedented depth of jet-black beauty using traditional Japanese lacquer.
Located in Kiso-Hirasawa, Shiojiri City, in the heart of Shinshu, surrounded by rich forests and air, Misora Urushi Kogei is a lacquer workshop that has thrived as a lacquerware town since ancient times. Selling lacquerware to travelers on the Nakasendo highway, the town has developed into a major lacquerware production area, evolving to meet the needs of the times while preserving traditional techniques. In this area interwoven with Japanese tradition, Misora Urushi Kogei continues to protect and apply these techniques, taking on the challenge of creating unprecedented new lacquer products.
The lacquer, urushi, is derived from the sap of lacquer trees, with only about 200cc obtained from trees over 20 years old. The sap, once impurities are removed, is called "kiurushi" (raw lacquer). When heated and partially dehydrated, it becomes "suguro" (pure black lacquer). Pigments can be added to make "colored lacquer." Black roiro-urushi, in particular, achieves a deep black color through a chemical reaction with iron powder during the refining process, resulting in a unique depth known as "shikkoku." The lacquer is applied in layers using special brushes and spray guns, adjusting the number of layers depending on the situation.
Lacquer hardens under moderate temperature and humidity, requiring careful adjustment of lacquer mixtures according to daily conditions. The lacquer is cured in a special drying room called a "muro," which requires regular turning of the pieces to prevent drips. High humidity can cause "chijimi" (wrinkles), so precise humidity control is necessary based on the product and environment.
After thorough drying, the surface is smoothed using special carbon called "kentan" while checking for unevenness under light. The surface is polished with various tools like sharpening stones and "kentan" as it progresses from the middle to the final coating.
The gold lines (maki-e) accenting the design of the Made in Japan Limited Collection URUSHI Stratocaster are delicately applied by hand using fine brushes called "maki-e fude." The guitar itself is a 60s-style Stratocaster, designed using profiling data from USA-made guitars. It features cross-wire pickups, settings, and tones that inherit Fender's authentic lineage. The specially selected Premium Vintage-Style '60s Single Coil Strat pickups deliver vintage tones reminiscent of a 60s Strat. The model is beautifully complemented with gold parts that add elegance to the jet-black finish.
This special Made in Japan Limited Collection URUSHI Stratocaster, merging the highest craftsmanship with Fender's heritage, is limited to a production of 15 pieces.
