I was looking for a Telecaster, possibly with an ash body and rosewood fretboard. This Limited Edition (only 100 pieces), made by Fender Custom Shop in 2005, immediately attracted my attention because of its selected lightweight ash body which sported marked grains further highlighted by its Sunburst finish and three layers of nitrocellulose. Although it’s defined as “Relic” by Fender, you can catch a glimpse of a little checking and it doesn’t have the excesses in artificial ageing that we have become accustomed to lately with Fender.
The neck has a ‘60s Oval “C” and is very large at the first fret, 1.74” (44.19mm). Although I prefer narrow necks, it’s very comfortable. The fretboard in slab rosewood has a modern radius, 9.5”, bone nut and medium jumbo frets.
You may be asking yourselves why there is a three-way toggle switch - that Fender called “Custom Eldred Switching”- on a guitar with only one pickup. This Esquire has very unique wiring that doesn’t make you regret the neck pickup. In first position the Custom NoCaster Vintage Tele pickup is only connected to the volume control - the tone one is disconnected - giving it a brilliant sound at the high frequency spectrum. At the central position both controls are enabled. At the third position the tone control is again disconnected but a “tone shaping” condenser greatly cuts the high frequencies and slightly cuts the low ones, dulling the sound and decreasing the volume subtly.
I transformed it into a Telecaster by adding a Celentano pickup to the bridge, the 59 Neck Tele with magnets in Alnico 5.
