Considered one of the most important musicians in rock history, Pete Townshend has drawn many kids to the electric guitar thanks to his way of playing. Not one of the most technical, but certainly extremely innovative, he has started using a Stratocaster modified for his needs since 1989. It was therefore only natural that the Fender Custom Shop would decide to dedicate a Stratocaster to him too: the Limited Edition Pete Townshend Stratocaster, N.O.S. (New Old Stock) with a Torino Red finish, unveiled in 2016.
Always accustomed to experimentation, the WHO's guitarist’s style consisted in an intertwining of acoustic and electric sounds. This was the reason why Fender inserted a Two-Post Fishman Powerbridge, equipped with a piezo pickup. The Townshend also had three Lace Sensor Gold pickups mounted for a Fender sound free from hum, and an internal preamp which gave it a creamy, harmonious overdrive. An extra knob, not very far from the bridge, enabled mixing and blending of the signals from the piezo with that from the pickups, so as to obtain both acoustic and electric sounds and electric/acoustic hybrids. The result was a guitar that combined modern technology with the timeless and classic Stratocaster’s shapes, suitable for guitarists that didn’t want to waste time switching from an electric guitar to an acoustic guitar. The maple neck was a soft “V” shaped and fixed to the body by a 4-bolt neck plate with micro tilt.
